Karma has brought me to RIM

Life has always been unpredictable for many of us. We can not say what will happen the next. Some say and believe that our future depends on our previous deeds. Some argue that it purely depends upon one's mindset to make our own future. But I feel it purely depends upon our Karma. All the sentient beings follow their own cycles in the circle of individual Karma. 

I had so much hope and expectations to be an engineer or a lawyer when I was in my higher secondary school. However, my class twelve examination has not favored me an opportunity for acquiring an Ex-country scholarship. Really upset and my dreams has got torn apart. Nevertheless, I kept trying, I applied for In-country scholarship and got an opportunity to study in Royal Thimphu College.

After spending three years of life there in Royal Thimphu College, I am now in Royal Institute of Management pursuing Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration. I say the journey of my life to be Karmic because Karma has brought me here in RIM. The course here seems totally irrelevant to my degree major- Bachelor in Computer Applications. I am thoroughly worried that I may not be able to live up to the hope and expectations that Royal Civil Service Commission, Royal Government of Bhutan and my relatives have bestowed upon me. 

However with the help of the well experienced lecturers and very intellectually grown up friends, I will strive myself to live up to everyone's expectations. I will not forget my life philosophy that is " to be the best and always strive for that only. Moreover,  to help others in my own small ways so that i may be important and remembered in the little ways." The eight days of orientations here in RIM is really giving me an insight of the institute and the course structure. The new academic policy which is equivalent to the other world universities will also be experienced by the us, I feel really fortunate for that too.

Although the facilities here in RIM seem quite inferior to my previous college facilities, however I will not compromise my hard work in my primary objective. I promise to my King, Country and people of Bhutan that I will work very hard in the institute and I will be back after a year to serve with utmost loyalty and dedications.

Simply Update in my Life Stage

It has been almost seven months after I have walked through the beautiful stage of Royal Thimphu College and received my graduation certificate from Hon'ble Chief Justice of Bhutan, Lyonpo Sonam Tobgye. I have experienced almost each and every pieces after my college life. I have known about the actual challenges that the job seekers have to face once graduated. I have experienced the pain and patience that every job seeker has to endure after graduation.

Nevertheless, I feel myself to be fortunate that I could experience each and every thing that came along my way. I have applied in every vacancy that has suited my qualification. I have sat for job examinations and job interviews. Those experiences were so critical and valuable for me as they gave me so much of life-related valuable experiences. I have challenged each and every obstacle that came my way. I have sat for Royal Civil Service Examination. I sat for the PGDPA examination category. I wondered each day and night after I appeared examination and until result was declared. Thank God!, At last I got call from one of my friends saying that I got through. My tensions and wonders were all vanished then. I thanked my God which helped me in each and every step to climb that came my way.

During Meet the People Program

After that I thought that I must be prepared to serve my country with utmost dedication and loyalty. I thought I must gain as much experiences as I could before I become a civil servant of the government. Then, I applied for an intern in the Cabinet Secretariat. I got an opportunity to work with the government's highest and the senior most officials. It has been almost two months now that I have been  working in the secretariat. I got an opportunity to attend twelfth Round Table Meeting. I have attended Meet the Press Program. I was present every Saturday with Hon'ble Ministers and Hon'ble Prime Minister for Meet the People Program. I have understood some of the grievances of the people of Bhutan. 

I would never forget to thank the Director of the Cabinet Secretariat, Dr. Phuntsho Namgyal, Head of the Grievance Cell, Mr. Sonam Tobgay and the Administrative Officer, Mr. Tshering Dendup for giving me wonderful opportunity to work and they have given me bags and bags of experiences which will help me in near future. I have to soon join Royal Institute of Management for my training, nevertheless I hope to join the office once I graduate from RIM.

Tribute to my College | Royal Thimphu College

My post here may seem more or less to boast my experiences gained in my stay at Royal Thimphu College, the first and only private college in Bhutan. First of all, before my readers start reading this post let me clarify in its first instant that this post is the tribute and the respect that I would like to pay to my college, the management of the college and the faculties there in the college. Moreover, I would not forget my colleagues who were vital and extremely involved with me in providing such spaces for my improvements.

It was on 5^th August, 2010 when I was admitted to Royal Thimphu College after I was awarded a scholarship by Department of Adult and Higher Education under the In-Country Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme (ICUGS). It was a new world for me then comparing to the very remote places I have dwelled in the east before. Moreover it was an exciting experience to meet with wide range of friends from all walks of life. 

In case of mine, college life was always a time for new and exciting experiences as well as a time to explore diverse and innovative ideas. I am actually grateful for the Royal Government of Bhutan for this initiative. Nevertheless on my behalf I took this opportunity to enhance my education and moreover a lifelong experiences. I constantly strived for excellence and I was committed to making my time as an undergraduate as productive and beneficial as possible. 

Attending Royal Thimphu College always liberated me and allowed me to not only explore a wider array of subjects, but also explore myself. I will now be able to apply my new-found knowledge to my entire life. The first semester in the college was no different than my high schooling days. I could make not much difference in my life. It was just listening lectures from the lecturers, doing assignments as assigned. 

But it is a different story in the next semesters then. I participated in all the events that took place in the college. I participated in most of the voluntary and social service activities. I was also an active member for the RTC Math Club for two semesters and have been the Club Coordinator for three semesters then. I have also organized three Inter Program Math Quiz Competitions which was loved and appreciated by most of the RTC family.

Out of eight hundred or more students, I was only the one to organize RCSC Preparatory Classes. I organized the class for three semesters. With the help of some of my lecturers, I helped those students who were interested in appearing the Bhutan Civil Service Examination. The unique and outstanding volunteerism of mine was appreciated by the management of the college and the students who attended the session. 

In my final year, I was also a Teaching Assistant. I volunteered to work in RTC Learning Resource Center. I taught some programming languages to second year BCA students. In the centre, I was there to help the IT students solve their problems related to the course. I was fortunate to be in that centre as I have learnt so much from the students that I have tutored. 

Moreover, during my final year in the college, I got selected as the Residence Assistant. As a Residence Assistant, my work was to create a positive environment by fostering a sense of community within the residence halls, by providing help and assistance to students, and by working with students and staff to ensure the best possible operation of the residence halls. We were considered as valuable members of the college whose work helped to develop a residential environment conducive to RTC students’ academic and personal growth. Therefore, the college is proud for us who enabled it to provide its student with residential services and facilities of the college to the fullest. 

In terms of my primary duty as a scholarship, I demonstrated excellently in my studies in all semesters. It can be authenticated by different levels of certificates that I have secured in Dean’s List and the Director’s List for every semester which were awarded in recognition of excellent academic achievement.

Strengths that I have gained after being in the college are exemplary leadership and social skills. These experiences will now train me to unearth creative solutions to challenges, organize my experiences in the community for the purposes of both. Now as I go on with the actual way of life ahead, I hope to become an instrumental member of society, using all of my energies to bring about constructive change and create a path to the “good life,” not only for myself but also for others.

Life in and after the college

It was always full of fun. Life was full of joys. Sometimes life seemed to be full of hardships, agonies, pains during my three years of stay in Royal Thimphu College. I always had a desire to write about this aforementioned topic, yet due to the lack of internet facilities I was unable to post it on my blog. While in the college it was always a fun when a lecturer was absent for a class, it was full of joy when we had a time to chat and play games in the computer labs. On the other hand I always loved to engage myself in social service-related works. 

During my stay in the college I volunteered to work as a Teaching Assistant. I taught my friends in second year. I was there to discuss the PHP class with them. It gave me immense experience and learned a lot from them.

On the other hand I also volunteered to teach and organize RCSC preparatory classes for the ones aspiring to appear the Bhutan Civil Service Preliminary Examinations. I learned so much from the RCSC course. With that experience and practice i could crack the preliminary exam with ease. In this regard I have so much hope and expectations that my friends those who attended the classes have done well cracked the prelims with ease.

I also worked as the Residence Assistant. I was selected to be a student leader for Tsenden Residence of the college. I had an opportunity to work closely with the student body and the management of the college. I got so many experiences being the Residence Assistant. 

Now it has been almost two months that I walked through the beautiful stage of Royal Thimphu College and graduated on 4th July, 2013. Life seems to be tough and challenging after the college. I have to compete with so many other graduates in this tight and competitive job market. Yet I try myself to compete with anyone with my strong courage. I work very hard to cross anything that comes my way. I make sure not to fail in any grounds. Be it in any written exams or interviews I make sure to impress the employers, even if I am not selected. I compete in any fields in which some posts may not be relevant to my degree. 

I work hard keeping in my that I have to keep and upgrade the name and fame of my college that gave me a degree. I wanna create better opportunities for my future colleagues. When I say these things, I am not here to boost myself but I wanna encourage my friends to work hard and compete with other graduates.

IT Graduates being left unattended

The very topic of mine may seem really unrealistic for the ones who are not in the IT field. It may also seem pessimistic for the ones who are already employed in IT sector of the country. Nevertheless, I being a recent and unemployed IT graduate for a month would like to share my experiences and feelings after my life in the world of job market. 

Life was full of works, full of enjoyments, exhilarating fun while in the college. All the students while in the college are much excited to get out of the college and experience the actual way of life. But in reality life is never easy. It is totally different from what we feel while in the college. Every second, every minute seem really long. Life as a jobless man, lingering from place to place, flipping every vacancy corner of each and every news paper in the country is like a life in a hell. However, most of the graduates including myself have much hope and expectations bestowed upon the Royal Civil Service Commission to announce the available vacancies.

However, as soon as it has been declared, I got stroke. I was shocked to see that in my course, there was just one vacancy, where I am pretty sure that hundreds of graduates will be competing. When I say this, it doesn't mean that I am not confident to face the competitive scenario in the job market in the country, yet I am little saddened to know that IT graduates are left out irrespective of the large requirement in the civil servant.

Moreover, the government says job seekers not to differentiate between government jobs and the private ones. I find some errors in saying this. This is not to blame Royal Government of Bhutan but I vividly feel it. Job seekers don't prefer in private sectors not because of the work load but because of the benefits and allowances. Private sectors in Bhutan id not developed and there can be a good number of comparisons that can be made between the two.

Nevertheless, I feel that the government and the related organizations and agencies must look closely upon the youths. I say not to directly employ them, but I want to urge the government to at least create opportunities according to the need of the nation. Moreover ministries and the government agencies announce vacancies later than the Bhutan Civil Service Examination. With this regard, it is really disadvantaged for the ones who are not qualified from the BCSE. I feel every ministries and other government agencies should work thoroughly to know the need of human resource so that all graduates working in civil service can be in the same grade. I say this because whether you are selected through RCSC examination or open competition we have to do the same work and the same work load.

Hope government will take my suggestions into considerations. And I would appreciate so many suggestions too from my readers.

RTC Online Admission System - My Project

Bachelor of Computer Applications in Royal Thimphu College as per the course syllabus prescribed by the Royal University of Bhutan demands us to do the real-time project which is of 300 credits and is equivalent to three modules. The IT department of the college in the Fourth semester i.e. when the BCA students are about to get into their final year go to organizations, institutes, agencies, Non-Government Organizations and Corporates to get the projects which will be taken as our project client. In my batch, we are 3 in number and we have nine projects in total. Our clients are Bhutan Power Corporations, Bhutan Telecom, Druk Holding Investments (2 projects), Department of Information and Technology, Royal Thimphu College, Bhutan National Bank, Athang Pvt. Ltd and Bhutan Herbal Bath Pvt. Ltd. We were divided into nine groups for which group comprises of 3-4 members each.

In case of my group we have selected to work for our college, Royal Thimphu College. We have learned and observed that the college Student Service Department and applicants are struggling during the admission process. We thought why not we can help the college in our own small ways that we could. My group started the development works in December 2012 and worked whole winter including weekends. Having worked for the live project for the first time of its kind we enjoyed a lot, though we faced some problems. Before starting the project we sat together for almost three to four days and planned our schedule. 

RTC Online Admission System is an online application through which students from different locations can access college information and take admissions. Using this system, time for application process will be reduced and students who are located geographically can fill admissions forms. Cost of traveling for students will be reduced; man power for university will be reduced.

It is an automate the system whereby it pre-checks the inclusion of all required material and automatically ranks each student’s application based on a number of criteria. The data used by the system is stored in a database that will be the center of all information held about students and the base for the remainder of the process after the initial application has been made. This enables things to be simplified and considerably quickened, making the jobs of the people involved easier. It supports the current manual process but centralizes it and makes it possible for decisions to be made earlier and easier way.

We have developed the system using PHP and the programming language in Eclipse working environment. We have used Xampp for the MySQL database. We have incorporated JQuery, Javascripts, HTML5 and other plugins are used for graphical display in case of reports generation for the administrators.

The Project was led by Mr. Somnath Choudhuri as the project guide and Mr. Yeshi Samdrup as the Team Leader. My self and Sangay Dema were the co-developers in this system. We may be soon hosting it in RTC website for the admission for 2014-2015 cohorts' admission.

Google @ RTC

We all know what is Google. We all use this search in all cases. We use it to solve our doubts. We use it to learn what we don't know. We use it to compare with our ideas and ideologies. We use it to lend help to do our assignments and projects while in the school and college. We use it in day to day life activities. Today, we the students of Royal Thimphu College had a golden opportunity to interact and listen with ten Google volunteers from different parts of the world. 

The workshop-like session started in our college auditorium where the Dean of the College welcome the ten volunteers for their work. Then they started with their mission of coming to Bhutan and explained their mission of "Googliness". Almost all volunteers explained it in their own terms. Maximum of them said that Googliness is helping and letting others know what they know without expecting anything in return. They were happy with the packed audience in the auditorium.

A group consisted of Marketing experts, Management professionals, Software Engineers and Leadership professional. After having attended the first general session for one hour in our auditorium, we were then let to go to our classroom to listen to two of the volunteers about Google's recent developments like Google Apps, Google Docs,  Google Glass, etc..

Out of which we were so much interested to know about Google Glass. We enjoyed watching video about the Google Glass where saw a man wearing that Glass can order or command the glass and it tells everything information about distances, location of his friends, takes images, etc.

Other interesting thing was an automatic Google Car which can travel without a driver. All the audience were surprised to know that a car traveled more than 10000 Kilometers without an accident. Later after lunch we had a session on developing web in the latest technology available. We were taught to develop simple website with Ruby on Rails. Nikita, one of the volunteers and Software Engineer in the company covered the whole stack from MySQL to JQuery.

We enjoyed and learned a lot. Thumbs up to the volunteers and the RTC management for organizing such event for us.

Democracy in Bhutan- Part IV

I am sorry if my stereotypical blog posts have made my readers bored. Actually I am forced to write till the fourth part which are dedicated for the four political parties. I am dedicating every part of the aforementioned post title for every political party of Bhutan who will be contesting in the primary round of Second Parliamentary election in Bhutan. I don't wanna be biases or inclined towards any political party being a apolitical student, so I am writing post for all of the parties differently.

This part four, which may be the last part for "Democracy in Bhutan" is dedicated to the Druk Chirwang Tshogpa. The party is also one of the new parties other than Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa who will also contest for the primary round of National Assembly election in Bhutan. 

The party believes in progress in pursuit of Unity, Prosperity and Happiness. The president of the party; Aum Lily Wangchuk says the party has 50% youth participation as their candidates in different constituencies. She also says that the party also comprises of some retired senior government officials and women. She said the members in the party have suffered and experienced all sorts of problems in lives so that they can understand the problems of people clearly.

Aum Lily in her public debates and forums says the reasons of her joining politics. She says she suffered from cancer and she was in her last breathe to leave the world. However, because of the prayers and her fortune she said she got relieved. During her bad times she said she had the strongest thought to serve the people. She said that she doesn't have any one to look after so that she will be fully dedicated in serving the people of Bhutan.

However, some sections of Bhutanese feel that it will be fearful for them to rely upon youths as their candidates who will be serving the country; if they get selected. They say DCT was hunt for their candidates and accepted whatever came their way. But when I say this I don't have any concrete proof to be proved but this is vividly what I have heard. Anyway, all the best for DCT.

Democracy in Bhutan- Part II

Having written the post for the aforementioned title which was dedicated for DPT, here comes the next post which is dedicated for People's Democratic Party. The party is being led by its president Tshering Tobgay who was the first democratically elected Opposition Leader of Bhutan.

 After having secure two seats in the parliament of Bhutan in 2008 elections, PDP secured to be the opposition party in the country. The party's president Tshering Tobgay and its member Damcho Dorji worked tirelessly to find each and every mistake of the ruling government, DPT.

As I said earlier, I am not inclined to any political party and I write this not to support PDP but just to exercise the right and the freedom of expression of mine being bestowed upon every individual in the constitution of Bhutan.

PDP believes in "Power to the People" which is stated as "Wangtse Chirphel" in our Bhutanese terms. It can also be restated as  "empowering people for liberty, equality and prosperity by devolving power and authority from the center to the people". As said earlier in my Part-I, there is similar appreciations and criticisms for the opposition party since 2008 till 2013. Some say, two of them did whatever they could do for the benefit for the people of Bhutan. But others say and are worried that how they will do if given a chance as a ruling party. They say it may be easy to find mistakes in others but it may be difficult to deliver your pledges for the people by yourself.

So, lastly I would like to let my readers to have flash backs upon what PDP has done as an opposition party. If they had done satisfactorily and you believe that they would do better if given a chance to rule the government, Go for them. If not think wisely and vote.

Democracy in Bhutan- Part I

Bhutan has experienced five years of democracy. The citizens of the country are now more clear about the form of the government. So, I would like to write the post on the aforementioned subject dedicated to all four political parties who qualified from the letter of intent that the Election Commission of Bhutan has prescribed for them.

In this first part I would dedicate this post to the Druk Phuensum Tshogpa, the ruling government of Bhutan from 2008 to 2013. I write this not to influence anyone nor that I support the party. My readers must be clear that I will be writing similar post for all other three parties, so never think that I am politically inclined towards DPT.

Druk Phuensum Tshogpa, after securing 45 seats in the National Assembly of the Parliament of Bhutan has ruled the country for five years. Druk Phuensum Tshogpa believes in "Growth with Equity and Justice" in the "Pursuit of Gross National Happiness". The party is led by its president Jigme Yoeser Thinley, who was the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Bhutan.

 In this period, there were so many appreciations for the government from all rounds and corners of the citizen. On the other hand there were so many people who were frustrated and not satisfied with the ruling government. but I don't have any comment to make in this very topic.

After successful completion of their five years, DPT again comes in the public to contest for the second round of the National Assembly Elections. DPT and other political parties nowadays introduces their vision. mission and manifestos for the people of the country. Some people of the country believes in the bags of experience that DPT possess; while on the other hand some group believes for the change. They believe experience will be gained once given a chance.

So, I would like to make my readers to think about whom to vote for. If DPT has meet their promised pledges and ruled the government according to the constitution of the country, go for DPT. If not why not try for a change. Voting is the secret power and duties/responsibility bestowed upon all of us, so use it. DO VOTE FOR NA Elections-2013.

Talk by Mr Foad Hamidi

Bachelors in Computer Applications students of Royal Thimphu College had an opportunity to listen to the talk by Mr Foad Hamidi. He is currently pursuing his PhD Computer Science specializing in Human-Computer Interactions. His thesis title is "Digital Tangible Games for speech Intervention". He has masters in Computer Science specializing in Human-Computer Interactions from York University in Toronto. 

It was an opportunity and an adventure to listen to him about his numerous publications and research works. He currently works for Thimphu Techpark as an adviser. His interest lies in the fields of researches and human-computer interactions. He said that the technology-oriented people must think in the better ways to help disadvantaged people who also wishes to use the technology like all of us. Moreover, he hobby lingers in designing and artworks. Wherever he travels he tries to learn something new and tries to implement it in a simpler manner so that each and every citizen of this world can enjoy it.

The crowd was annoyed when he explained and shows his design of the prayer wheel-like thing. He designed in such a way that there is a chip inserted in it, whereby when a number of it is being turned by number of people, some affect will be displayed by the computer.

The crowed loved the way when he talked about the 3D printing that is happening in the world. He showed the group that even a car being printed by the 3D printer in advanced factories of the world. Moreover, some sections of the crowd wondered if it could also print anything we want. 

The theme of his presentation was "Technology and Happiness". He explained that the technology may be in any kinds but it must make us happy. He said it must also help people to reduce the task force. The crowd could not imagine when he said that the plant can even ask for the water via email/sms after having tied a sensor with a chip on it.

The talk was wonderful, so I thank this opportunity to be the best one for the IT students of the college. Moreover, it wan an opportunity to explore ourselves outside the classroom theories.
